Snow days are always the perfect excuse to curl up with a good book and read. I did just that this week. The two books on my nightstand were The Knife of Never Letting Go by Ness and Rosie and Skate by Bauman. Both are great.
The Knife of Never Letting Go is the sci-fi tale of Todd Hewitt, who has been raised in a small town on another planet. A plague has caused men's thoughts be broadcast constantly for all to hear, allows animals to speak and all the women to die off...or so it seems. As Todd approaches his 13th birthday, he finds himself on the run from a madman preacher and an army of men from his town. Every chapter ended with a cliffhanger (which made the story awfully contrived at some points). All in all this is an exciting read and I'm really looking forward to reading the next book The Ask and the Answer.
Rosie and Skate is just a lovely, sweet book. Told in alternating chapters, Rosie and Skate (who are sisters) detail the highs and lows of their lives. The girls who live down the Jersey deal with their alcoholic father, new relationships, and heartbreaks. I loved so many of the characters in this book. It has a good sense of place too.
